What Is a Sanctions Designation?

The designation mechanic explained - and why it makes list freshness a compliance property.

Overview

A designation is OFAC's action of adding a party to the SDN list - making it a blocked person. Designations flow from Executive Orders, statutes, and UN resolutions.

What happens on designation

The listed party is blocked: US persons may not transact with it, and its property is frozen. For crypto, designations include wallet addresses - which is why the wallet list grows over time.

Why it matters for agents

Designations land between releases, at any time. A wallet designated this morning should be blocked this afternoon - the screen's freshness is the compliance property. The update-frequency FAQ covers the mechanism.
