What Is an Embargoed Jurisdiction?

The embargoed-jurisdiction concept, explained for builders.

Overview

An embargoed jurisdiction is a country or region under comprehensive OFAC sanctions: nearly all trade, financial, and other dealings with it are prohibited. The SanctionsAI dataset tracks 16 such jurisdictions.

The list

Comprehensively embargoed jurisdictions include Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Crimea, and others — OFAC maintains the current list. Screening checks counterparty geography against it.

Why it matters for agents

An agent that pays a counterparty in an embargoed jurisdiction commits a violation even if the wallet and name are clean. Geography is a third screening surface alongside wallets and names.

The control

Screen counterparty jurisdiction before payment — the same sub-100 ms call as wallet and name screening. The country checker demonstrates it for free.
